The Kentucky women?s basketball team will travel to Washington, D.C., for the Wildcats? first road test of the season against No. 14/13 George Washington Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 5:15 p.m. EST. The game will be played at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center and is part of a double-header with GW?s men?s team vs. Boston University. The Big Blue Sports Network (radio) with Neil Price will broadcast the game live.
The Wildcats (1-0) are looking for their first win over GW in the program?s 34-year history and their first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 25 Florida in quarterfinal round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament in 2006.
?This game obviously will be a big test for us,? UK Coach Matthew Mitchell said. ?George Washington is a very good team and we will have to play extremely well if we want to be successful. I think playing a team with their talent this early is a good way to measure where we are and what we need to work on for SEC play. We also are looking forward to seeing the sights around Washington D.C. and visiting the Supreme Court. It should be an exciting trip for us.?
UK opened the Matthew Mitchell era with a win last Saturday, defeating USC-Upstate 74-59 in Memorial Coliseum. It was UK?s ninth-consecutive season-opening victory. Six players scored in double figures to lead a balanced scoring effort. Freshman guard Carly Morrow (Chattanooga, Tenn.) came off the bench in impressive style, notching a team-high 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. She also grabbed a team-high tying six rebounds. All-SEC center Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.), making her first appearance of the season after sitting out both exhibition games with nagging injuries, followed with 10 points, five boards and two blocks in just 18 minutes. Kentucky made 10 three-pointers in the game, the most since sinking 12 against Stetson on Nov. 22, 2005. UK?s defense was stifling as it held the Spartans to just 29.2 percent (21-of-72) from the floor.
No. 14/13 George Washington (2-0) is coming off a thrilling two-point win, 70-68, over Virginia on Monday. The Colonials, who will be playing their second game in three days, return four starters and 11 letter winners from last year?s squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and posted a school-record-tying 28 victories. The Colonials have seen much success in recent years as they are one of 10 Division I programs to have made the NCAA Tournament in 14 of the last 17 seasons.
Highly touted junior college transfer Antelia Parrish leads the Colonials in scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. The 6-0 forward/guard is coming off an 18-point/10 rebound performance at Virginia. Following close behind in the scoring column is senior guard Kimberly Beck, an AP honorable mention All-America selection last year. She is averaging 17.0 points per game after leading GW with 20 points over Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Also averaging double-digit scoring are seniors Sarah-Jo Lawrence and Whitney Allen with 16.0 and 10.5 ppg, respectively.
The Wildcats return to Memorial Coliseum Sunday, Nov. 18 to face Sun-Belt opponent Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m. EST.
