LEXINGTON, Ky. — After coming off the bench to net two crucial goals to lift the Kentucky men?s soccer team to an improbable 2-1 upset win over No. 1 SMU, sophomore forward Tim Crone has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, it was announced Monday morning.
Crone came off the bench in the 59th minute and needed just 23 seconds to even up the score with SMU 1-1. The Cincinnati, Ohio native, connected on a header from midfielder C.J. Tappel inside the penalty box for the first UK goal of the game. Just minutes later in the 65th, Crone took a cross from Masmui Turnbull inside the penalty area and headed the ball off the cross bar and into the net for the game-winning goal. For the season, Crone has now netted five goals and dished out one assist. The spark Crone contributed to the UK lineup was remarkable considering that the forward had not played in the past four games while nursing a hernia injury that will require surgery at the end of the season.
Kentucky?s win marked the first win over a No. 1 ranked team in the 17-year history of the UK soccer program, and its first win over SMU in six meetings. The Mustangs had outscored UK 14-3, including a combined 6-0 score in two meetings in 2006. Kentucky had never scored more than one goal on SMU.
Kentucky (7-8-2, 5-2 Conference USA) is riding a four-game conference winning streak, boosting the Wildcats to third place in the conference entering the final weekend of action. UK had clinched a spot in the C-USA Tournament, held Nov. 14-18 in Birmingham, Ala.
Each Monday, College Soccer News [collegesoccernews.com] releases a listing of the top players in the nation from the previous week, usually consisting of 11-12 players. This is the first such honor for UK this season, and the first since Riley O?Neill earned the honor on August, 31, 2006.
UK returns to action on Friday with its final regular season game of the season, a 7 p.m. EDT showdown with South Carolina.
