LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The Bluegrass? renowned Kentucky Horse Park was the setting for the 2007 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships on a chilly Saturday morning. The UK women?s squad finished fifth in the SEC with 104 points; eight tallies behind fourth-place Florida. On the men?s side, the Cats finished ninth overall in the conference.
Two Wildcats were awarded at the end of the day with SEC honors. Junior Andrea Halasek led the women?s squad by crossing the line first for the Cats. Halasek?s 6K mark of 21:25 was good for 14th overall; earning her a spot on the women?s second team All-SEC. Freshman Adam Henken finished the 8K race second on the team and 41st overall at 25:32, earning him recognition as part of the men?s All-Freshman team in the conference.
Halasek?s top team finish is her first this season. Following close behind was fellow classmate, Jessica Ortman who finished 18th overall with a time of 21:31. All five Wildcat scorers were in the top 26 with a spread of only 18 seconds from one to five. Next to cross the finish were senior Lavera Morris (21:35 ? 21st), freshman Leah Ryan (21:42 ? 25th) and junior Jenna Ortman (21:43 ? 26th) to round out the scoring for the Cats.
The Lady Razorbacks of Arkansas won their second-straight women?s SEC team title with 39 points. Tennessee finished second with 84 points, just 1 mark ahead of Georgia in third. Senior Sarah Madebach of Georgia raced across the line at 20:49 earning her the women?s individual title.
The UK men were led by senior Chris Long with his first top finish on the team this season. Long?s time of 25:27 placed him 35th among the competition. Henken?s second-place team finish was followed by junior Bruce Hordusky who hit the line 51st overall at 25:52. Senior John Thompson (26:05 ? 59th) and freshman JD Horton (26:07 ? 61st) finished the scoring for the Cats.
Arkansas also took the SEC men?s title back to Fayetteville with 36 points. The title is the 17th- consecutive for the Razorbacks since joining the conference in 1990.
Florida finished second on the men?s side with 74 points followed by Alabama with 82. The Crimson Tide?s Emmanuel Bor won the men?s individual crown with a mark of 23:50.
In two weeks Kentucky sets course for Louisville, the site of the NCAA Cross Country Southeast Regional, to race at Sawyer Park for the second time this season.
