JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. ? Kentucky junior Ben Fuqua carded a career-low 67 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges and sits atop the leaderboard with one round complete. The Wildcats are currently second with a five-under par score of 283 and trail the host-team East Tennessee State by one stroke.
ETSU and UK are followed by No. 12 Wake Forest in third with a score of 286. Auburn is currently tied for fourth with Virginia Tech after both schools fired opening round scores of 287.
Fuqua opened his career round with a birdie on the first hole and carded two more on the front nine. The Danville, Ky., native recorded a two on the par-three seventh hole and followed that with another birdie on eight to stand at three-under through nine. Fuqua added a pair of birdies on 10 and 16 to finish with five for the day for a five-under par 67.
Senior Cale Barr recorded four birdies in the first round and finished with a one-under par 71 to tie for 11th in the individual standings. Junior Andy Winings had three birdies and finished with an even par 72, while freshman James Kania tied his personal best with a one-over par 73. Kania had two birdies on the day. Sophomore Derek Oldham rounded out the scoring for the Cats with a three-over par 75 which tied him for 52nd overall.
The three-day tournament continues on Saturday with the second round.
