Junior defensive end Nii Adjei Oninku will be out for the season because of a knee injury, Coach Rich Brooks announced Monday.

Oninku sustained tears of the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in his knee during Saturday?s scrimmage, confirmed Monday by an MRI exam. Oninku had entered preseason practice as a starter at defensive end. He played in 12 games last season as a sophomore, starting five games, and made 12 tackles. He played in 12 games as a redshirt freshman, with five starts, and totaled 24 tackles.

?I feel really bad for Nii Adjei because he has worked so hard and played a lot of productive football for us,? Brooks said.

Asked how the position stacked up in the absence of Oninku, Brooks said, ?We have Dominic Lewis, Jamil Paris, and Travis Day, who is having a very good camp. (Former defensive end) J. D. Craigman could go out there in a pinch, but he?s playing inside (at defensive tackle) right now. Austin Moss is out there at end as well (having moved from defensive tackle).?

The Wildcats had two practices on Monday and will return to the Nutter Training Center practice field Tuesday afternoon.
