LISLE, Ill. ? Incoming UK Hoops and Kentucky track and field freshman Victoria Dunlap (Nashville, Tenn.) defended her youth women?s heptathlon title and captured the long jump title at the USA Youth Outdoor Championships in Lisle, Ill., last week.
Dunlap built a 224-point lead on the first day of competition and captured two of the final three events to claim the heptathlon crown with 4,838 points. A day after winning the young women’s heptathlon, she leapt to her second championship of the meet in the long jump. Dunlap jumped 5.73m/18-9.75 to edge out Chia Hudson (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), who finished second with a jump of 5.70m/18-8.5.
Dunlap was named the 2006 Tennessee Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the Tennessean and was the state champion in both the pentathlon and high jump for Brentwood Academy. Heading into her senior campaign, she was ranked as the No. 1 returning senior in the heptathlon and also has posted a personal-best mark of 5-9 in the high jump.
A two-time Miss Basketball finalist, Dunlap was the 14th-ranked basketball recruit in the All-Star Girls Report. She helped lead her high school squad to 19 wins to end her junior year, culminating in the school?s first-ever state title. She averaged 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as a senior and is the highest-ranked player of this year?s freshman class, one of the top 10 recruiting classes in the nation. Dunlap chose Kentucky over Vanderbilt, Florida and Kansas.
