PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago ? Junior Kentucky sprinter Mikel Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Maloney, Trinidad and Tobago) captured the men?s 110 high-hurdle national championship in his home country and will next compete in the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships in El Salvador next week.
Thomas captured the 110 HH championship with a personal-best time of 14.14, which ranks as the third-best time in that event in school history. Thomas also finished first in the 400-hurdle event but was disqualified due to a violation. Should Thomas post a time of 52.00 or better in the 400 IH in the NACAC Championships, he would earn a berth in the upcoming Pan Am Games to be contested in Rio De Janeiro July 13-29.
Thomas transferred to the University of Kentucky prior to last season from the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. In his first year in the Bluegrass, Thomas set the indoor school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.03 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York.
