LEXINGTON – The Kentucky women’s tennis team earned a bid to its 11th-consecutive NCAA Tournament and will face Arizona in the first round as the 64-team field was announced Tuesday.
The Wildcats travel to Atlanta where Georgia Tech hosts four teams for the first and second rounds. The No. 3-overall seed Yellow Jackets square off with Furman in the first round.
This year’s bid is the 11th straight for Kentucky and the 18th overall in the history of the program. Each of the last five seasons, UK has advanced through the first two rounds to the NCAA Championships, where the final 16 teams battle it out for the national title. Last season, the Wildcats went on the road to knock off Clemson and advance. This year’s championships are in Athens, Ga.
“I am very pleased to be in the tournament,” Kentucky head coach Carlos Drada said. “One of our goals at the beginning of the year was to make the final 16 and to do that you have to get in the tournament first. Our team is preparing hard and I believe we have a good chance to advance if we play well.”
Kentucky was one of eight Southeastern Conference schools to be awarded a bid. Georgia led the way as the No. 2 national seed while Florida and Vanderbilt also earned national seeds and will host the first two rounds.
The Wildcats are coming off a quarterfinal appearance in the SEC Tournament where they dropped a hard-fought match to the Commodores, 4-2. At 18-7 overall, UK is two wins shy of its third 20-win season in the last five years.
