WEST POINT, Miss..?Freshman Erica Still once again led the Wildcats? scoring when she tallied a one-over-par in round one of her first career Southeastern Conference Championships Friday at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
Kentucky topped off a stellar round of play with a 10th place showing after carding a round of 308. No Wildcat shot lower than an 81 in the first round of action, with three players registering rounds in the 70s.
Eight teams are within seven shots of each other, while everybody trails Georgia who fired an impressive three-under team score to lead by six shots. Alabama is in second with a three-over-par. UK trails ninth place Auburn by 10 strokes. All of the top nine squads are rated in the top-30 of the country. The Blue and White are four strokes in front of host Mississippi State and their in-state rival Ole Miss.
Georgia?s Garrett Phillips turned in a five-under-par performance to lead all individual scorers. UK?s rookie-phenom is in a tie for 12th place after her one-over-par 73. Still?s opening round 73 is easily one of her better opening rounds this season, as the Waycross, Ga., native averages 78.80 in openers.
Juniors Beth Felts and Elizabeth Dotson are not far behind the rookie, as both Tennessee natives turned in rounds in the 70s. Felts carded a four-over-par 76, while Dotson fired a seven-over 79. Felts and Dotson were last season?s leaders at the SEC Championships.
Seniors Katie Johnson and Marissa Muir also registered quality opening starts for the underdog-Cats. Johnson capped off her first round with an eight-over-par 80, while Muir was just a stroke behind at nine-over. All five Wildcat scorers turned in scores that were lower than their opening round averages, an impressive feat overall for the club.
Second round action resumes in West Point, Miss., on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. EDT. Live results are available through Mississippi State?s website at www.mstateathletics.com.
