LEXINGTON, Ky. ? After opening their 2007 outdoor seasons with a strong start at the Shamrock Invitational, the Kentucky track and field teams travel to Atlanta, Ga., this weekend to participate in the Yellow Jacket Invitational for the third consecutive year.
The two-day event, hosted by Georgia Tech at the George C. Griffin Track, commences Friday at 6 p.m. EDT with the hammer throw, while the remaining events take place on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. EDT on Saturday. Participating teams include: Auburn, Clemson, Chattanooga, Connecticut (women only), Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee (men only), Tulane (women only), Vanderbilt (women only), Wake Forest and Wisconsin. Five men?s teams and three women?s teams in the meet are in the Trackwire Top 25.
The Cats notched three NCAA qualifying marks two weeks ago at the Shamrock Invitational. Freshman Emily Bernhardt (Marietta, Ga.) notched the team?s first regional qualifier with a toss of 184-6 in the hammer throw, which is the second-best mark in that event in the SEC so far this season. Junior Gavin Ball (Cottage Grove, Wisc.) notched a qualifying mark in the discus with a throw of 173-1, while sophomore Jos? Acevedo (Caracas, Venezuela) qualified in the 100 meters with a time of 10.45.
Last season, the Wildcats had record-breaking success at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. The men?s 4×400 relay team shattered what was then an 11-year-old school record by finishing with a time of 3:04.81. That record was later broken at the NCAA Mideast Regional with a time of 3:02.97. Then-rookie thrower Ashley Muffet (North Canton, Ohio) broke the UK freshman record in the shot put with a first-place toss of 55-11.25.
