LEXINGTON, Ky.?The No. 54 University of Kentucky men?s tennis team returns home on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader match-up with Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m., and Morehead State at 6 p.m. at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
It is expected, weather permitting, that the Wildcats will make their first appearance on the outside courts at the Hilary J. Boone courts this season.
After dropping two SEC matches on the road this weekend, Kentucky (10-8, 2-4) welcomes the chance to return home where they hold a 9-3 overall mark, and are winners of seven of their last nine matches on familiar grounds. Kentucky has only lost one match in doubleheader action this season, and that was to No. 73 Furman in late February.
In singles action, three Wildcats have posted double-figure wins for the season led by No. 88 Bruno Agostinelli with a team-leading 16 wins on the year. Senior Peter Bjork is close behind having won 15 matches in the Blue and White, including 10 in the spring slate. Junior Marcus Sundh has notched the most spring wins of any Wildcat with 12 wins, and 14 overall.
Tennessee Tech (4-11, 4-0) recently defeated Eastern Kentucky to stay unbeaten in conference action this weekend. In singles action, five out of six Golden Eagles were able to put away their opponents, winning all five of Tech’s points in the match. The Golden Eagles are led by junior Borja Zarco who was named the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for March 22, as selected by the conference office. Borja, playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, claimed a 2-0 record in league singles play with a 2-1 record in solo play. Zarco had a 2-1 doubles record last week, 1-1 in the OVC, paired with teammate Tiago Gilioli.
Last time in action the Morehead State (3-10, 0-3) men’s tennis team posted two wins in singles action but it was not enough as Ohio Valley Conference leading Samford held off the Eagles for a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Greg Anderson claimed one of the Eagles? singles wins when he defeated Manuel Miletic 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot. Anderson’s win was his first in OVC play and pushed his overall record above the .500 mark to a team leading 6-5.
After the match-ups with the Golden Eagles and Morehead State, Kentucky will face a daunting task as its final seven opponents of the season all are ranked in the top-55 in the nation. The Wildcats still have dates with three teams ranked in the top-10 in the country, including a home match on Friday, March 31, with No. 1 Georgia.
First serve is set with Tennessee Tech for 1 p.m. The match with Morehead State is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Complete results of the day?s action can be found at www.ukathletics.com.
