LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Kentucky freshman outfielder Brock Wright has been name to the College Baseball Foundation National Player of the Week Honor Roll, the organization announced Tuesday.
Wright helped pace the Wildcats 4-0 week, as Kentucky set school records for the best start to a season (17-0), and set the mark for the best winning streak in school annals. Wright had a monster week at the plate, batting .455 (5-for-11), ripping three home runs. Wright touched the plate 10 times during the week, slugging for a 1.273 percentage. The Paducah, Ky. native drew six walks in the four-game span to boost his on-base percentage to .667.
For the season, Wright has batted for a .370 average, hit four home runs, scored 15 times, and driven in 11 runs. His four home runs have come in only 27 at bats on the season. On Monday, Wright earned his first Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honor, the second such honor for a Wildcat freshman this season.
Wright was not the only Wildcat to have an excellent week, as senior Mike Brown has been absolutely blistering at the plate. The Davis, Calif. native batted 12-for-19 with a .632 average during the four-game week. Brown hit his first career home run, in addition to driving in eight runs, to complement four doubles.
Kentucky?s preseason All-America catcher Sean Coughlin, also tore up opposing pitching staffs during the week, batting 11-for-21 (.524), with two home runs and 13 RBI. Coughlin also scored five runs during the week and brought his season average up to .400. Coughlin has now hit a team-high tying four home runs and driven in a club-best 35 RBI. Last week, Coughlin earned SEC Player of the Week honors.
Kentucky returns to action Tuesday evening with a 4 p.m. EDT matchup with Canisius. Taking the hill for Kentucky will be junior southpaw Tommy Warner.
