The Kentucky men?s golf team is ninth after one round of play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. The Wildcats posted a team score of 294 in the opening round to stand 12 strokes behind the day-one leader UCLA who shot 282 in the first round.
Georgia is three strokes back at 285, followed by Georgia Tech who is third with a total score of 286. Arizona State and No. 1-ranked Florida round out the top five with totals of 290 and 291, respectively.
Texas A&M?s Martin Piller leads the individual standings after shooting a five-under par 67 in the opening round.
Sophomore Andy Winings is the lone Wildcat in the top 10 after recording four birdies on the back nine and five on the day to fire a two-under par 70. Winings is tied for seventh in the individual standings after his first round. Freshman Alex Volpenhein is tied for 21st with a round one score of 73 (+1), followed by junior Cale Barr who is competing in his second tournament of the season and shot a two-over par 74 to tie for 33rd overall. Barr had four birdies in his opening round. Junior Brad Doster and senior Andrew Stephens round out the scoring for the Wildcats at 77 (+5) and 81 (+9), respectively.
The three-day event continues Saturday with the second round at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Tee time is set for 11 a.m. ET.
