LEXINGTON, Ky. — The No. 21 Kentucky baseball team looks to continue its winning ways as it plays host to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, Tuesday at Cliff Hagan Stadium. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. EST.
UK (7-0) is off to the third best start in the 103-year history of the Kentucky baseball program, opening up the season with dominating sweeps over Furman and Tennessee Tech.
Taking the mound for UK on Tuesday will be freshman Duran Ferguson. The right hander has impressed thus far this season, hurling six innings in two appearances and leading the team with 12 strikeouts. The Blountville, Tenn. native will look to pick up where he left off in his first career start Wednesday, nothing his first career win against Murray State.
Fans can catch the action live in Lexington on WXRA 1580-AM with Dick Gabriel and Neil Price on the call.
The Wildcats have plated 75 runs in its first seven games after scoring a school-record 500 runs during the historic 2006 Southeastern Conference Championship campaign. UK has rolled up to a .331 batting average, boosted by several fresh faces. Newcomers Sawyer Carroll (.480 avg., 6 2B, 11 RBI), Jason Kipnis (.364 avg., 3 3B, 3 HR, 1.045 slg.), and Brian Spear (.333, 6 RBI, 6 2B) have paced the Wildcat lineup that is still rooted with veteran bats like Antone DeJesus (.375 avg. 10 RBI) and Sean Coughlin (.258 avg., 1 HR, 7 RBI).
Last time out for Kentucky, UK utilized a five-run seventh inning to capitalize on some Tennessee Tech pitching and fielding miscues to rack up a 10-3 win over the Golden Eagles and secure the sweep.
The Golden Grizzlies started its season strong with a 3-0 start before faltering in a 10-5 defeat to Eastern Kentucky.
