Kentucky juniors Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.) and Samantha Mahoney (Detroit) each were named to the All-Southeastern Conference team for the 2006-07 season, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday. Both players were named to the second team.
Elliott currently leads the Cats in scoring (all games and SEC games only), averaging 13.8 points per game, including 14.0 in conference play. She ranks in the top 10 of four SEC statistical categories, including third in field goal percentage. Her .581 percent clip from the field ranks 10th nationally. The 6-foot-6 center also ranks second on the team and is tied for 11th in the SEC in rebounding, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures in 22 of the last 26 games, including six consecutive. Elliott became the 26th member of UK?s 1,000-point club against Vanderbilt (2-1-07) and ranks tied for 19th on UK?s all-time scoring list with 1,100 career points.
?I?m just extremely proud to have two players represented on the All-SEC team,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?Sarah stepped up her game after Eleia [Roddy] went down with a knee injury. She knew that people in the post would have to put up bigger numbers and she accepted that challenge. Her scoring production is up, her rebounding is up, she?s in better condition and she has been able to play more minutes. The fact that she is a junior, she has matured more on the defensive end. She is a force on both ends of the floor this season and she usually attracts more than one defender.?
Mahoney, a preseason All-SEC selection and second-team selection last year, has started in each of Kentucky?s 29 games this season. The Motor City native is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game, which ranks 16th in the SEC in scoring (all games). Mahoney has scored in double figures 20 times this season and became the 25th-member of UK?s 1,000-point club against Mississippi State (1-25-07). She has compiled 1,100 career points and is tied with Elliott at No. 19 on the all-time scoring list.
?Sam is one of the most versatile guards in the league,? DeMoss said. ?She can score in so many different ways. She can score off the dribble and she can shoot the three. She plays multiple positions for us this season. Defensively, she has improved, as she worked hard over the summer to get a lot lighter and quicker on her feet. ?
This is the fourth consecutive season UK has had at least one player selected to the All-SEC teams, and the first time since 1999 that two Cats have been named to All-SEC teams.
Seventh-seeded Kentucky faces 10th-seeded Arkansas at 3:30 p.m. EST on Thursday in the opening round of the 2007 SEC Tournament in Duluth, Ga. The game will be carried live on Fox Sports Net South and the Big Blue Sports Network (radio) with Neil Price.

UK?s Roddy Named to SEC Community Service Team
Junior Kentucky forward/center Eleia Roddy (Columbus, Ohio) has been named to the ninth-annual Southeastern Conference Women?s Basketball Community Service Team for the 2006-07 season, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday.
Roddy, who has sat out the entire season after sustaining an ACL injury to her right knee during a pre-season practice on Oct. 17, traveled to Spain during the summer with the Athletes in Action’s traveling mission team, teaching children basketball while also sharing her faith. In addition, she serves food at the Hope Center and does volunteer work at a local church. She is a volunteer reader to elementary school children, has helped organize a food drive to benefit God’s Pantry and is a guest visitor at Veteran’s Hospital and several local schools.
The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams in each of its 20 sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight athletes from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
