LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Kentucky thrower Ashley Muffet (North Canton, Ohio) broke her own school record in the women?s shot put Sunday and the men?s 4×400 relay team ran the second-fastest time in the country this season as both claimed Southeastern Conference titles on the final day of the 2007 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Kentucky in E.J. Nutter Field House.
A number of other Wildcats set season and personal bests throughout the weekend to highlight a successful league meet for Kentucky.
?I was pleased with the way we did today,? UK head coach Don Weber said. ?I was encouraged by our eagerness to compete and stick our nose into the competition. Coming into today, I was kind of disappointed about how things went yesterday, but some people really stepped up and did well. The momentum built throughout the day.?
Muffet captured the 2007 shot put title with a school-record toss of 56-8.50. Muffet, who holds the school record in both the indoor and outdoor women?s shot puts, broke her own personal-best and school-record toss of 55-10.5 that was set in the Iowa State Classic two weeks ago. Muffet came into the meet ranked third in the nation in Trackwire?s Dandy Dozen and was named the SEC Female Field Athlete of the Week two weeks ago for her performance at Iowa State.
?I?ve been having pretty good practices and had high expectations,? Muffet said. ?I?m pretty excited that I was able to do this and that I was able to do this here at home. You never know what you?re going to get at this meet. The SEC is the most athletic conference in the country. I?m just thankful that I have competitors around me that push me.?
Muffet?s mark is the best in the league this season and is the SEC?s only NCAA automatic-qualifying mark in the women?s shot put this season.
?Muffet is one of the most committed, motivated, interested athletes that I have ever run across,? Weber said. ?She has just been getting better and better ever since she got here. Fifty-five feet is just a huge throw, but today to go 56 feet is just unbelievable.?
Muffet finished tied for 10th in the overall individual standings with 13 points as UK?s top scorer in the meet after posting a sixth-place finish in the 20-pound weight throw on Saturday.
?Ashley did a great job and this means a lot,? Kentucky throws coach Doug Reynolds said. ?We?ve had a history of shot-put titles at the University of Kentucky. She came back and carried that title again for us. I thought she competed well today.?
The men?s 4×400 relay team finished first with a time of 3:05.87 to set a new Nutter Field House record and automatically qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championships to be held March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark. The squad, consisting of Justin Harrison (Wheaton, Ill.), Nathan Browning (Petersburg, Ill.), Jose Acevedo (Caracas, Venezuela) and Luis Luna (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) posted the second-fastest time in the country this season and broke the school record set in 1996.
?All we?ve talked about all year is defending our home turf,? Kentucky sprints coach Erin Tucker said. ?It seems like we?ve been chasing LSU the last three big meets, at Regionals and at outdoor SECs, and we finally got them. It?s the No. 2 time in the country going to nationals. It?s a good feeling. We?ve worked hard.?
Last season, the 4×400 squad ran the fourth-fastest time during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The squad posted second-place finishes behind national champion LSU at the SEC Championships and NCAA Mideast Regional during outdoor season.
?They?ve kind of been the engine that has driven this team for all of last year, and they?re just four guys that work really hard,? Weber said. ?Luis Luna is just one of the most committed guys and one of the most daring competitors that I have ever seen. What he did today against two really great teams was just unbelievable.?
Juniors Andy Fryman (Maysville, Ky.) and Alek Grietens (Nipomo, Calif.) both notched personal-best marks in the men?s weight throw. Fryman finished fifth with a toss of 62-7.75, which ranks as the fourth-best throw in school history, and Grietens was ninth with a 59-4.25 which is fifth all-time at UK.
Junior distance runner John Richardson (Ocean City, N.J.) posted a season-best time of 4:05.12 in the mile to finish in fourth place, while senior Georganne Way (Lititz, Pa.) was sixth in the women?s mile with a time of 4:52.81.
Freshman sprinter Jenna Martin (Nova Scotia, Canada), who nearly missed winning her heat in a hotly contested women?s 400-meter dash finished sixth in the event with a provisional-qualifying time of 53.64. Luna finished fourth in the men?s 400 with a mark of 46.67.
Junior mid-distance runner Lavera Morris (Orlando, Fla.) finished fourth in the women?s 800 meter with a provisional-qualifying time of 2:07.74. Way finished sixth in the event with a 2:10.93. The duo joined Martin and senior Jackie Gordon (Frankfort, Ky.) on the women?s distance medley relay squad that finished second. The women?s DMR, which won last season?s SEC title, bested last season?s championship-winning mark of 11:34.46 with a time of 11:27.79. The men?s DMR finished in sixth place.
Junior Andr? Silva (Centereach, N.Y.) finished seventh in the men?s 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:26.30, while Acevedo finished seventh in the 200 meter with a 21.37.
Senior Rachel Kohler (Georgetown, Ind.) was seventh in the women?s high jump with a leap of 5-7.75.
As a team, both the Kentucky men?s and women?s squads finished in seventh place with scores of 40 points each. Arkansas claimed the men?s crown with a score of 146 and Tennessee won the women?s with a 120.
Kentucky will participate in NCAA qualifying events next weekend with locations to be determined. Complete information will be released later this week.
