LEXINGTON ? The 21st-ranked Kentucky women?s tennis team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a big victory over rival and 72nd-ranked Louisville late Tuesday night at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (7-1) scored four straight-set victories in singles while cruising to the easy win. Early on, UK got an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles from the nations third-ranked duo of Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk over Robyn White and Natalie Laszkowski. The win was enough to clinch the doubles point as U of L, stricken by injuries, had only two doubles teams out if its five available players.
In singles, UK won a point at No. 6 by default for a quick 2-0 lead. At Nos. 2 and 3, Schwenk and freshman Sarah Woestmann wasted no time in getting the Wildcats to the four points needed for victory. Schwenk, ranked 60th nationally, beat White 6-1, 6-0 while Woestmann improved 8-0 in her college career with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jo-Ann Van Aerde.
Coventry and Whitney Spencer followed with straight-set victories at Nos. 1 and 5. Coventry beat Natalie Laszkowski, 6-2, 7-5, and Spencer downed Natalia Baez, 7-5, 6-1 to make it 6-0.
Louisville scored the match?s final point with a three set win on court four as Bianca Gorbea squeaked by Jessica Giuggioli, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (7).
The Wildats return to action on Friday at 4 p.m. when they host South Florida at the Boone Tennis Complex.
