BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? The 21st-ranked Kentucky women?s tennis team fell for the first time this season, a 5-2 defeat at the hands of No. 27 Indiana on Sunday morning.

For the first time this year, UK dropped the doubles point, as the Hoosiers picked up victories at Nos. 2 and 3, winning a tiebreaker on court two as the decider. The loss was the first this year for the duo of Carolina Escamilla and Sarah Woestmann.

Woestmann, a freshman, rebounded to score one of the Wildcats? two singles victories to remain perfect at 7-0 on the year. She coasted past Brianna Williams 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Senior Kim Coventry scored UK?s other point with her biggest win of the season, a come-from-behind 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10) win over 86th-ranked Alba Berdala at No. 1 singles.

Indiana clinched the match early with straight set wins on courts two, five and six. With a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Laura McGaffigan No. 2, No. 60 Joelle Schwenk had her nine-match win streak ? that dated back to the fall season ? snapped. Coventry?s three-set match was one of two on the day as Escamilla dropped a tough three setter to Sigrid Fischer at No. 3, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (3).

“We played a very intense Indiana team today,” Kentucky head coach Carlos Drada said. “Each of their players played with a lot of enthusiasm and determination during the crucial stages of the match. We’ll certainly learn from today and improve from it. We are looking forward to playing a strong Louisville team.”

The win improved Indiana to 9-2 on the year while UK lost its first match and dropped to 6-1. It is only the second win for the Hoosiers in the last 11 meetings in the series.

Kentucky returns to action against rival Louisville on Tuesday.
