PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 20th-ranked Kentucky women’s tennis team beat Brown, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon to improve to 6-0 on the year, the best start for the team in more than 18 years.

The Wildcats had started 5-0 six times since 1990, but failed each previous time to get a sixth straight to begin a year. The 7-0 win was UK’s fourth in the six-game run, that included a 5-2 road win over No. 26 Harvard on Friday.

Playing without No. 1 player Kim Coventry in singles, each player stepped up a level and all six won in straight sets as the Wildcats coasted to the win. Senior Joelle Schwenk and freshman Sarah Woestmann remained undefeated on the year with wins. Schwenk played No. 1 and downed Daisy Ames easily, 6-3, 6-1.

Woestmann dropped a game for the first time in four matches, but managed to remain perfect in her collegiate career with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Sarah Mansur on court three. Fellow freshmen Whitney Spencer and Christine Johnston scored straight set victories at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.

Sophomore Carolina Escamilla rebounded from a tough three-set loss on Friday to beat Michelle Pautler, 6-4, 6-2 on No. 2. Jessica Giuggioli, another sophomore, dominated Kelley Kirkpatrick, 6-1, 6-0.

The Wildcats jumped on Brown early, taking the doubles point by winning all three matches. Kentucky has now won the doubles point in all six contests this year, going 16-2 overall.
