The University of Kentucky men?s golf team will return to action this weekend, Feb. 10-11, as it heads to Gainesville, Fla., for the SunTrust Gator Invitational. Sixth-year head coach Brian Craig?s Wildcats finished 14th last year at the tournament which takes place at University Golf Course in Gainesville.
?Our track record in the Gator Invitational has not been very good in recent years,? said Craig. ?However, we are due to have a good tournament down there to kick off our spring semester. The guys are very optimistic and ready for the challenge.?
The impressive 14-team field includes host team and current No. 1 Florida, along with No. 6 Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Southern, No. 18 Georgia State, LSU, North Florida, Ohio State, Purdue, No. 17 Tulsa, UAB, UCF and No. 23 Wake Forest.
Junior Brad Doster, sophomore Andy Winings and freshmen Alex Volpenhein and Brian Belden make up the weekend roster for Kentucky. Seniors Tyler Wilson and Andrew Stephens will battle it out for the fifth and final spot in Florida.
The Wildcats finished in the top-10 four times during the fall season and captured the team title at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate. UK finished seventh at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 24, in its last outing.
This weekend?s two-day tournament is set to begin on Saturday, Feb. 10, with 36 holes, followed by the final 18 on Sunday.
