LEXINGTON — The 24th-ranked Kentucky gymnastics team returns to action on Friday at 7 p.m. CT when it faces fourth-ranked Alabama at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Wildcats are coming off a quad-meet victory last weekend that saw them upend No. 17 West Virginia while also beating Maryland and North Carolina. In the meet, four different UK gymnasts won event titles, including the first career title for Emily Green, en route to the team victory.
“We did a lot of good things last week,” Kentucky coach Mo Mitchell said. “I thought we were very good on vault, bars and beam. We faltered a bit on the floor, but that was very uncharacteristic of us and I expect us to bounce back big this week.”
Meanwhile, Alabama, which features the nation’s top two all-around gymnasts in Morgan Dennis and current SEC Gymnast of the Week Kassi Price, knocked off arch rival Auburn last week with a season-high score of 197.475.
Kentucky, now without the services of all-around competitor Natalie Rubinstein who went down with a season-ending injury, expects to compete three freshman in the all-around on Friday night. That is a step up from previous meets when the youthful UK squad has had 12 of 24 lineup spots filled by newcomers, but only one in the all-around.
“Our team always seems to compete well at Alabama,” Mitchell said. “They always have a great crowd, a knowledgeable crowd, and our team feeds off that. It should be an exciting meet.”
Kentucky last knocked off a top-10 ranked team a year ago when it sprung the upset on No. 9 Auburn.
