LEXINGTON ? Former Kentucky soccer standout Riley O?Neill was chosen in the first round of the United Soccer Leagues 2007 First Division Draft on Wednesday, going to the league champion Vancouver White Caps.
O?Neill, who grew up on Vancouver Island in Campbell River, British Columbia, was the 10th player taken overall. It is the third straight season UK has had a player drafted in a professional league. Last season, Andy Gruenebaum went third overall in the MLS Supplemental Draft. In 2005, Jamal Shteiwi was chosen in the Major Indoor Soccer League draft.
O?Neill, who was named first-team All-Conference USA and first-team All-Region, set a school record with 17 goals, including seven game winners. He led UK to a second-place finish in C-USA and a No. 13 national ranking at the end of the regular season.
For his career, O?Neill owns the school record for game-winning goals and shots while ranking in the top five in points, goals and assists.
Since the end of Kentucky?s season, O?Neill has been in Europe training with professional clubs.
