LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Led by the third-ranked doubles duo in the nation, the No. 19 Kentucky women?s tennis team put the finishing touches on a strong start to the 2007 season, defeating in-state rival Murray State on Saturday evening at the Hilary J. Boone Indoor Tennis Complex.

Kentucky improves to 2-0 on the season after previously dispatching East Tennessee State in the morning match Saturday of the season-opening double header. Murray State drops to 0-1 in its season lid-lifter.

UK was led by strong performances from seniors Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk. Coventry and Schwenk, whose victory in the ITA Southeast Regional earned them a No. 3 national ranking, outlasted Murray?s senior twin tandem of Anna and Rachael Lask in a feisty doubles match, 8-4.

Carolina Escamilla and Sarah Woestmann defeated Murray State?s Anne Pennington and Cassady Pruitt 8-5 to give UK a 2-0 advantage.

On the third court in doubles action, Kentucky senior Caroline Winebrenner and freshman Christine Johnston battled hard before falling to Lynsey Bochenek and Angela McGahee, 8-5.

Kentucky started singles action off well, as Coventry, Schwenk and Escamilla each picked up quick wins. In the most spirited match of the evening, Coventry outlasted Anna Lask to earn the win, 6-3, 6-3. Woestmann, Jessica Giuggioli and freshman Christine Johnston also won their respective individual matches, to give the Wildcats an unblemished singles record during the evening match.

The Wildcat women?s tennis team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 as they host Tennessee-Chattanooga and Marshall in a doubleheader at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center beginning at noon.
