LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky sprinters posted a strong showing Friday in day one of the annual intrasquad Sprint Preview at Nutter Field House. Each of Kentucky?s returning sprinters posted improved times from a year ago.
?I was impressed by the job our sprinters did today,? said Erin Tucker, assistant coach for Sprints. ?All of our returning sprinters ran faster than they did last year, and that?s a good sign that we are moving in the right direction.?
Sophomore Gordon McKenzie (Queens, N.Y.), who participated in the World Junior Championships this summer as a member of the U.S. Junior National Team claimed the men?s 60 meters with a clip of 6.79, while sophomore Jose Acevedo (Caracas, Venezuela) finished second in the event with a 6.84. The marks were much improved from last season when McKenzie claimed the event with a 6.85.
In the men?s 300 meter, junior Justin Harrison (Wheaton, Ill.) finished first with a 33.54, while Acevedo was second with a 33.74.
In the women?s 300 meter, freshman Jenna Martin (Nova Scotia, Canada) finished first with a time of 39.14.
The Sprint Preview concludes Saturday with several events beginning at 3:30 p.m. EST in Nutter Field House. The men will have the 150 meter dash at 3:30 p.m., the women will compete in the 400 meters at 3:35 with the men?s 4×400 meter relay team beginning at 3:40 p.m.
Kentucky begins its 2007 Track and Field regular-season slate when it plays host to the annual Kentucky Invitational Jan. 12-13 in the Nutter Field House.
