NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Jenny Pfeiffer scored 22 points – including five 3-pointers – and Carly Ormerod had 18 along with seven assists to lead No. 21 Kentucky over Old Dominion 69-55 on Saturday.
The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 15-12 lead midway through the first half, but Kentucky scored seven unanswered points and never trailed again.
The Wildcats (2-1) shot just 27.3 percent in the first half, but managed to bring a 27-23 lead into halftime.
In the second, Kentucky improved to 15 of 23 from the floor and made five of seven 3-pointers.
Samantha Mahoney’s 3-point basket with 8:12 left in the game started a 10-3 run that put the game away and pushed the Wildcats to a 65-49 lead.
Lydia Watkins pulled down 11 rebounds – nine of those on defense – and Jennifer Humphrey grabbed another 10 for Kentucky. Mahoney scored 12 points.
T.J. Jordan scored 11 for the Lady Monarchs and Jazzmin Walters contributed nine. Tamara Ransburg had four steals.
Old Dominion (0-2) was 28.3 percent from the field.
The two teams met for the first time in 1979 and played annually from 1982 to 1987, when both schools were considered among the top programs in the country.
The Lady Monarchs hold a 7-3 advantage in the series.
