LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The Kentucky rifle team looks to stay undefeated this weekend, when it hosts national contenders Nebraska on Friday and West Virginia on Sunday.
?This weekend will be a really good test for where we stand in the national scope of things,? Kentucky head coach Harry Mullins said. ?Nebraska is a very solid team and they have put up some really good numbers so far this season. I think that if we shoot the way we are capable, then it should be a close match. West Virginia is also a solid team, which means we are really going to have to put in a lot of hard work for both matches. In the past few years we have fallen short against Nebraska – they have established themselves as on of the top teams in the country each season and their performance so far this season proves that.?
Kentucky is coming off a solid weekend which saw the Wildcats down in-state rival Murray State and UT-Martin. UK was paced by two freshmen, Thomas Csenge and Jen Pason. Csenge won the individual title vs. both opponents and Pason was a close second.
The match will begin Friday against Nebraska at 8 a.m., with air rifle set to begin at 10:30. Both smallbore and air rifle will be shot on the downstairs range of UK?s Barker Hall. Sunday?s match will pit UK against West Virginia, a 12th place finisher in the 2005 NCAA Championships. The air rifle portion of the match will be shot on electronic targets in the upstairs of Barker Hall.
?Having a young team it is hard to predict what our numbers will be, yet one thing that I know we can predict for sure is that we are going to work very hard,? Mullins concluded. ?This is the time of year where we really have to check our endurance and our confidence. Having two teams like this will definitely test our ability to stay focused. Both teams are in our conference, so both of these matches are especially important.?
