LEXINGTON ? The 14th-ranked Kentucky soccer team takes its shot at the Conference USA championship on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Memphis in both team?s regular-season finale at the UK Soccer Complex.
Sitting in second place in the league standings, UK can claim the conference crown with a win and an SMU tie or loss against Marshall. The Mustangs have been ranked No. 1 most of the year, but are just 1-1-2 in their last four outings after starting 13-0-1.
A league title was highly unexpected entering the year. Kentucky was predicted to finish seventh in the league in a poll conducted of the league?s coaches in the preseason.
However, the Wildcats enter Saturday?s game on a roll, having gone unbeaten in their last three and 3-1-1 in the last five. On Wednesday, UK scored a huge 1-0 road win at Tulsa on Mathew Baum?s first goal of the season. The victory by Kentucky produced the only home loss of any of the top four teams in the league standings.
Returning home to face the Tigers, UK puts its 9-1 home record on the line. A win would mark a school-record 10th home win of the season and would run the Wildcats home win streak to seven, which would tie the school mark.
The game marks the final home contest (barring postseason play) for six Kentucky seniors: Riley O?Neill, Nathan Li, Mathew Baum, Joey Grigsby, Aaron Sheffield and Matt McAlpine.
Last year, Memphis scored a 2-1 win over UK in Lexington on Michael Coburn?s goal in the 100th minute. After falling behind 1-0 in the 55th minute, Baum tied the game with a goal 74 seconds later before Coburn ended it in extra time.
Memphis owns the all-time series, 2-1 with wins in the first meeting (1991) and last year. Kentucky?s victory in the series came in a 1992 game in Lexington.
