JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team finished 15th today, Oct. 15, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn. The Wildcats struggled without junior Brad Doster who suffered a wrist injury and finished at 934 (312-308-314) in the three-round tournament.
Tennessee won the team title with a score of 869 (294-290-285) with a birdie on the final hole to edge second-place and host-team East Tennessee State who finished with a total of 870 (291-291-288).
Sophomore Andy Winings led the Wildcats and tied for 49th overall with a three-round score of 227 (75-77-75), followed by sophomore Ben Fuqua who tied for 69th with a total of 233 (77-74-82). Freshmen Alex Volpenhein and Brian Belden finished with scores of 235 (79-78-78) and 239 (81-79-79), respectively, to round out the scoring for the Cats. Doster was forced to withdraw before the tournament began and did not compete in the two-day event.
?Even with Brad Doster being injured and only having four players, this is the most embarrassing performance we have had since I have been at UK,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?I still believe in this team, but we simply need for some of our more experienced upperclassmen to get their games in shape and help this team. Our younger players are quite talented and are going to accomplish great things here, but right now I think we are expecting them to carry too much of the burden.?
The Wildcats return to action next weekend, Oct. 22-24, as they travel to Orlando, Fla., for the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.
