CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Kentucky women’s tennis team had an outstanding day at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday, advancing all three singles players in the main draw and sending two doubles teams into the round of 16.
With all the success, Jessica Giuggioli and Caroline Winebrenner provided the highlight of the day by upsetting ninth-seeded Austin Smith and Katina Tsang in the second round, 8-5. The duo beat Larisa Bekmetova and Paula Pereira of Winthrop in round one, 8-2. The competition doesn’t get any easier as they meet fifth-seeded Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson of Duke on Saturday.
Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk cruised into the second round with an 8-1 victory over Duke’s Parker Goyer and Clelia Deltour. The pair received a first-round bye by virtue of being seeded fourth.
All three singles players in the draw, Coventry, Schwenk and Carolina Escamilla advanced. Coventry, seeded fifth, coasted with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Masha Ilina of East Tennessee State. She’ll face Meg Fanjoy of North Carolina in the second round.
Meanwhile Escamilla rallied from a set down to knock off Elena Triebskorn of Longwood, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. She meets another Tar Hell, Caitlin Collins in round two.
For the second time in three weeks, Schwenk beat Laura Reichert of North Carolina, this time by a score of 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. She meets second-seeded tarika Bertrand of Vanderbilt in the second round.
The only loss for UK on the day came from the doubles pair of Escamilla and Whitney Spencer, who fell to ninth-seeded Ghizella Schutte and Caitlin Woriskey of Tennessee, 8-6, in a hard-fought battle.
Action continues Saturday.
