CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional, highlighting another solid day of competition for the Kentucky women?s tennis team.
The duo, seeded fourth in the tournament, coasted past Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc of Clemson, 8-3, in its only match on Saturday. The pair meets fifth-seeded Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson of Duke on Sunday.
Mang and Robinson ousted UK?s Jessica Giugglioli and Caroline Winebrenner in their Saturday match, 8-6.
Schwenk scored the biggest win of the day for a Wildcat in singles action. She upset second-seeded Tarika Bertrand of Wake Forest, 6-3, 7-6 (6) in the round of 32. However, she couldn?t keep up the momentum and fell to No. 9-seed Blakeley Griffith of Tennessee later in the day in straight sets.
Coventry, seeded fourth, also won her first match of the day before being beaten. She knocked off Meg Fanjoy of North Carolina, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to advance to the round of 16. However, there, she was beaten by Anastasia Zhukova in a tough three-set match, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Kentucky?s other singles entry, Carolina Escamilla fell in straight sets to UNC?s Caitlin Collins in her only match of the day.
