ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? Joelle Schwenk placed third in the singles draw of the Michigan Wolverine Invitational this weekend, highlighting a successful weekend for the Kentucky women?s tennis team?s.

Schwenk actually knocked off eventual tournament champion Chisako Sugiyama of Michigan in straight sets in a Friday exhibition that was played because both players had first-round byes.

Following that victory, Schwenk cruised into the tournament?s semifinal round with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Purdue?s Anna Dzeva and a 6-1, 6-1 performance against Wolverine Tanvi Dudhela.

Michigan?s Tania Mahtani ended Schwenk?s run, but she rebounded to handily beat second-seeded Nika Koukhartchouk of Ole Miss, 6-3, 6-4 in the third-place match.

Sophomore Jessica Giuggiolo also went 4-1 over the weekend, with her only defeat coming at the hands of teammate Christine Johnston, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the tournament?s second roundef. Her biggest win of the weekend came in consolation play as she beat third-seeded Elizabeth Exon of Michigan, 6-4, 7-5.

After beating Giuggiolo, Johnston went on to fall to Sugiyama in the quarterfinals. She rebounded to soundly beat Marquette?s Erin Watkins, 6-4, 6-2, in consolation action on Sunday.

Shwenk and Caroline Winebrenner teamed up to go 2-1 in round robin doubles action. After falling on Friday, the pair came back to beat Marquette?s Lauren Little and Kylie Moore, 8-5, on Saturday before knocking off another Golden Eagles pair, Shannon Brown and Robin Metzler, 8-3.

Most of the team is off from competition this weekend, but the nation?s eighth-ranked doubles pair of Kim Coventry and Carolina Escamilla head to the ITA All-American this weekendef. The duo is seeded eighth in the tournament, one of college grand slam tournaments.
