LOUISVILLE, Ky..— The University of Kentucky women?s golf team concluded play at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup in eighth place out of 14 teams in their second tournament of the season. The University of Louisville played host to the event held at its Cardinal Club.
Kentucky shot 308 (+64) in three rounds and broke the top 10 in scoring for the first time this season. Host Louisville claimed its own crown, firing an 892. Augusta State placed second trailing the Cardinals by five strokes. UK fell three shots behind seventh place East Tennessee State.
?I saw a lot of improvement this week,? said Coach Stephanie Barker. ?We looked more comfortable on the greens, hit a few more birdies and played a solid tournament.?
Senior Katie Johnson fired her best round of the young season to lead the Wildcats in the third round. Johnson, a Lexington native, shot a three-over-par 75 on the final day of competition to conclude the tournament tied for 27th place with a score of 233.
Junior Beth Felts also tied for 27th after shooting a third-round score of 77. Felts registered the first under-par score of any Kentucky golfer in the second round yesterday (71).
?Both Katie (Johnson) and Beth (Felts) looked strong this week,? said Barker. ?I?m proud of how hard they both are working and playing.?
Freshman Erica Still placed in a tie for 32nd with a three-round total of 234, 18-over-par. Senior Marissa Muir tied for 45th with a score of 240.
Freshman Jessica Smith, who was in 26th place after two rounds yesterday, withdrew from the tournament this morning due to a slight back injury.
?I saw a lot of positives this week,? Barker said. ?As the year goes on I expect more and more out of this group of players who will continue to improve each week.?
Maryland?s Kelly Calkin earned the individual title shooting a one-under-par 217. The Terrapins shot the best third round team total (295) to climb to third place on the final day.
Kentucky will return to action Sept. 30-Oct. 1 when they play host to their own Wildcat Fall Invitational being played at the University Club.
