LEXINGTON ? On the heels of an amazing run that has seen Kentucky score 16 goals in a three-game span, the UK men?s soccer team now leads the nation in scoring, averaging 3.67 goals per game.
Leading the charge is senior striker Riley O?Neill, who is tied for the national lead in goals with nine and points with 20. His goal total is more than double that of his nearest competitor in Conference USA, teammate Michael Strong, who has four goals this year.
O?Neill has scored in five of UK?s six games this season and has multiple goals three times. Both O?Neill and Strong have tallied a hat trick.
A trio of Wildcats have done most of the table-setting for explosive Kentucky attack. Sophomore Masumi Turnbull and freshmen Jase Griffiths and Barry Rice each have four assists on the year and are tied for 23rd nationally.
However, UK hasn?t just been good on the offensive end. The Wildcats rank 11th in the nation in goals-against average with a miniscule 0.32 allowed per game. The team?s four shutouts places them 10th nationally. Goalkeeper Dan Williams, who has shouldered most of the duties in the net ranks 15th in the country in goals against and 14th in save percentage.
Kentucky is the only team in the country to rank in the top 15 in both goals and goals against.
The Wildcats put their undefeated 5-0-1 record ? the best start in school history ? on the line Wednesday at 7 p.m. when Michigan comes to the UK Soccer Complex.
