Wildcat junior midfielder Megan Jones was named the SEC Player of the Week as announced by the league office this afternoon.
Jones helped lead the Kentucky women?s soccer team (4-2-0) to a weekend sweep of Ohio State and Michigan scoring four points on a goal and two assists. She assisted on two goals in Friday night?s 3-0 victory over the Buckeyes including an assist on the game winner. She then recorded the game-winning goal on Sunday with 41 seconds left in the match en route to the 1-0 victory over Michigan. Not to be overlooked though was her defensive prowess, as early in the Michigan match, she recorded a save on the goal line to keep the score knotted at 0-0 in order to set up her late game heroics.
?Megan had a great weekend, coming up with some awfully big plays for us,? said head coach Warren Lipka. ?She?s really developed over the last year and she?s going to continue to grow as the season goes on.?
Jones is the first Wildcat to win the honor this season and the eighth in school history. Overall UK has received 11 SEC Player of the Week honors with former Kentucky standout Courtney McCrudden the last to win the award, doing so on September 25, 2005.
Jones and the Wildcats will play their lone mid-week match of the season this Wednesday as they begin a five-road match stretch with a 5:00 game in Oxford, Ohio against the Miami (OH) RedHawks.
