LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team will kick off the 2006-07 season this week, Sept. 5-7, at the 2006 Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan.
The Wildcats, who were recently ranked ninth in the nation by Golf World, are one of four collegiate teams from the United States who will compete against eight Japanese squads. Arizona State, Central Florida and San Diego State will join UK in Tanagura. The 13 teams are slated to play 18 holes each day at the Tanagura Country Club.
Senior Tyler Wilson, junior Cale Barr and Brad Doster, sophomore Andy Winings, freshman Alex Volpenhein will compete for the Wildcats this week. Wilson, Doster and Winings were part of the five-man team that turned in the best finish in school history when they finished fifth at the NCAA Championships last season in Sunriver, Oregon. Barr, Doster and Volpenhein all recently competed in the 106th U.S. Amateur.
?This is a great way to start the season with a trip to Japan for the Topy Cup,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?We are very fortunate to have this opportunity to see a different part of the world while also competing against some very talented U.S. and Japanese teams. This should be a trip of a lifetime and, hopefully, will be the beginning of a great year for Wildcat Golf.?
