EVANSTON, IL. – Freshman Katie Fahey picked a fine time to score her first collegiate goals, providing the tying goal and golden goal for the Kentucky women’s soccer team (1-1-0) as they defeated the Northwestern Wildcats (1-1-0) in overtime 2-1.

Trailing 1-0, Fahey scored the Cats’ first goal of the season tying the game at 1-1. Fahey controlled the ball at the top right of the 18-yard box, beat a Northwestern defender and put a shot just out of the reach of NU goalie Lauren Johnson in the 51st minute.

Her second tally came 3:49 into the first overtime when Megan Jones fired a shot off a breakaway that was saved by Johnson, but Fahey was there for the rebound and put back and the UK victory.

Northwestern took a 1-0 lead, connecting on a goal late in the first half. Shannon Schneeman took a shot from 24 yards out that hooked into the upper-right corner of the goal for a 1-0 NU lead with 1:59 left in the first half.

Kentucky senior goalie Anne Ogundele was repeatedly at the right place at the right time for the Wildcats keeping them in the goal between the pipes. In the 13th minute of action, Northwestern had a scoring opportunity off a header, but Ogundele was there for the quick deflection and save.

Freshman Giuleana Lopez had an opportunity to score her first career goal in the 75th minute when she split a couple Northwestern defenders and fired a shot on goal, but Johnson was there for the diving save.

Kentucky manufactured a couple scoring opportunities late in regulation on fast break opportunities, however Ashley Menick’s shot sailed high and Fahey was unable to connect on the shot.

The Wildcats open the home portion of the 2006 schedule next weekend when the team hosts the Kentucky Invitational. UK will entertain the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in a 7:30 p.m. ET match on Friday followed by a 2:30 p.m. ET affair with instate rival Louisville on Sunday.
