Coach Mickie DeMoss is known for creating excitement for women?s basketball in the Bluegrass State like no one has seen before. Now the 2006 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year has created something else to get excited about – a charitable foundation known as Mickie?s Team.
The foundation?s mission statement is two-fold: to develop strong community resources that will provide meaningful and lasting benefits to individuals of all walks of life and assist community organizations with their effectiveness in reaching under-served and the disadvantaged.
?I?ve always thought it was important to give back to the community and the people that give so much to me,? DeMoss said. ?Creating a foundation was the best platform for me to reach and assist more people. I hope to have a greater impact on helping people with this foundation, more than what I could do individually.?
To kickoff the foundation?s beginnings Mickie?s Team will play host to a charity golf tournament on Tuesday, August 29 at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort. The cost is $150 per person and proceeds will benefit UK?s Center for Research on Violence Against Women. DeMoss will personally match dollar-for-dollar all monies raised at the tournament up to $10,000.
?The Center?s mission and success is something to which I am deeply committed,? DeMoss said. ?The Center works in Kentucky and nationally to advance our understanding of violence against women and children, improve education in these critical areas, and support professionals who intervene daily with women and children suffering violence.?
