Last weekend, Venezuelan natives junior Luis Luna and freshman Jose Acevedo both competed at the Venezuela National Championships. Luna earned a first place triumph with a season-best mark of 46.51 in the 400, while Acevedo won the 200 (21.28).
Both sprinters enjoyed excellent first seasons in Lexington. In the 400, Luna ranked fifth all-time outdoors and ninth indoors. Acevedo broke the UK frosh record in the outdoor 200 (20.79, fifth all-time). Both runners also competed on the nationally-ranked 4×400 relay teams which finished the 2006 campaign with the fourth fastest marks in the country both indoors and outdoors (3:02.97, UK school record).
Luna and Acevedo are both slated to return for the 2007 season, along with regional qualifying sprinters Nathan Browning and Justin Harrison. Assistant coach in charge of sprints, hurdles and relays Erin Tucker recently was named Mideast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year.
