LEXINGTON — With four first-team selections and a second-team member, Kentucky dominated the All-South Region awards announced Monday by the American Baseball Coaches Assocation.

Catcher Sean Coughlin, first baseman Ryan Strieby, second baseman John Shelby and outfielder Collin Cowgill were each named First-Team All-Region by the ABCA. The quartet took up four of the 14 total spots on the team and four of the 10 position slots. Only Alabama and Vanderbilt managed as many as two first-team honorees.

The four were the anchors of Kentucky’s record setting offense, which shattered the school mark with 500 runs scored on the year. The group combined to hit 71 home runs and 68 doubles while driving in 239 runs. They were only the fifth quartet in SEC history to each hit at least 15 home runs in a season.

Not to completely outdone was sophomore pitcher Greg Dombrowski, who earned a spot on the second team. The Rome, N.Y., native went 10-2 with a .283. His season was the best by a UK pitcher in nearly 20 years.

For Cowgill and Dombrowski, the awards are a bit of redemption after each was left off the All-SEC team. Shelby, a Lexington native, earned first-team All-South honors for the second straight year.

All five are now eligible for the ABCA All-America team, which will be announced from the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
