SUNRIVER, Ore. ? The No. 26 University of Kentucky men?s golf team will be part of the 15-team field to compete for the 2006 NCAA Division I Men?s Golf Championship as it advances to play in Saturday?s fourth and final round. The Wildcats fired a third-round 300 (+12) to bring their three-day total to 870 (283-287-300) which puts them in a four-way tie for 10th place at the Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore.
Washington continues to lead the field and is now seven-under par at 857 (281-282-294). Oklahoma State, Wake Forest and Arizona State are tied for second, each three strokes behind the leader at 860. Minnesota and Lamar share fifth place with scores of 865, while Clemson is seventh at 866. Southeastern Conference schools Florida (867) and Georgia (869) are eighth and ninth, respectively, while the Cats are tied with Texas A&M, Arizona and UCLA for tenth. Duke and Brigham Young make up the rest of Saturday?s 15-team field.
Oklahoma State?s Jonathan Moore took over the top individual spot with a three-under 69 to bring his total to 207 (68-70-69). Wake Forest?s Kyle Reifers trails Moore by a stroke after firing a one-over 73 to stand at eight-under for the tournament.
Senior Matt Kohn turned in the best Wildcat performance in the cloudy and rainy third round, finishing with an even par 72. Kohn sank a 25-foot putt on 18 and chipped in for birdie on the par-four fifth hole to stand at one-over par for the tournament. The Longwood, Fla., native is tied for 30th overall with a three-day total of 217 (71-74-72).
Junior Tyler Wilson also played well in the soggy conditions of day three. Wilson made three birdies in the round and finished at one-over par 73 for the day. The Lexington native drained a 25-foot putt for birdie on the par-four 11th hole before nailing a 30-foot putt two holes later on the par-three 13th. Wilson now has a total of 224 (71-80-73) through three rounds of play.
Freshman Dan Woltman had two birdies on the day and finished at five-over par 77. Woltman is now tied for 82nd with a total score of 222 (71-74-77). Fellow freshman Andy Winings carded a six-over 78 and is ranked 30th in the individual standings with a three-day total of 217 (70-69-78) to tie Kohn for the team lead at one-over par. Sophomore Brad Doster rounded out the scoring for UK with a 79 to bring his score to 225 (76-70-79) with the fourth and final round left to play.
The Wildcats will tee off at 12:30 p.m. ET in Saturday?s final round as they compete for the NCAA title.
