This past weekend the Kentucky throwers got after it on the West Coast with some impressive marks at the Mesa Classic (Fri.) and Sun Angel Classic (Sat.). Junior Andy Fryman notched a personal-best in the shot put, while senior Ildiko Varga re-broke her school record in the discus.
Fryman?s mark (62-4) improved his personal-best by almost two feet at the Sun Angel Classic and moved the Maysville, Ky. native into fourth all-time at Kentucky. Fryman placed second in the event and as of Saturday night owns the seventh-best toss in the country. He owns regional qualifying marks in the shot put, discus (179-0, sixth all-time UK) and hammer throw (183-2, third all-time) this season.
At the Mesa Classic, Varga?s toss of 185-10 in the discus improved her former school record by over three feet. The mark currently ranks fourth in the country. Varga also improved her personal-best in the hammer throw (176-10, fifth all-time UK). Junior Kathleen Biondi finished second at the Sun Angel Classic with a javelin throw of 128-5 (132-11, season-best, Baldy Castillo Invite). Sophomore Lauren Abney improved her season-best to 127-2.
Freshman Ashley Muffet moved up to second all-time at UK in the hammer with a huge throw of 183-2 at the Mesa Classic. On Saturday, Muffet placed sixth in the shot put with a regional mark of 49-10. Muffet owns a season-best of 52-5.25 (third all-time UK) and like Fryman, has qualifying marks in three throwing events (shot, hammer, discus).
Sophomore Alek Grietens improved his personal-best in the hammer throw to 172-11, which ranks sixth all-time among Wildcat hammer throwers.
Up next, the runners will head to the Eastern Kentucky Invite (Fri., April 21), while the throwers will head back to the West Coast and Titan Invitational, Sat., April 22, in San Diego, Calif.
