FRANKLIN, Tenn. ? The Kentucky women?s golf team fired a 315 on Friday in windy conditions at the Vanderbilt Legends Club and is currently in 10th place after the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Championships.
Defending SEC Champion Auburn leads the tournament field after shooting a 12-over-par 300. Georgia and Tennessee are tied for second place with 301s. The top six teams in the field, which features 10 teams in the Golfweek top 50 poll, are within four strokes of one another.
LSU?s Caroline Martens and Alexis Rather fired even-par 72s on the opening day of play to lead the individual field.
The Wildcats are being led by senior Ali Kicklighter (DeLand, Fla.), who fired a 5-over-par 77 and currently is in a tie for 23rd place. Sophomore Volunteer-state natives Elizabeth Dotson (White Bluff, Tenn.) and Beth Felts (Chattanooga, Tenn.) both are tied for 33rd place with first-round 78s.
Senior Erin Faulkner (Bowling Green, Ky.) and junior Katie Johnson (Lexington, Ky.) are tied for 50th place with opening-round 82s to round out the tournament field for the Wildcats.
?For the most part, everyone played really solid today,? UK head coach Stephanie Barker said. ?We were very consistent, but we just didn?t have anyone go low today. This is a very competitive field and with the wind, none of the teams broke 300. Tomorrow will be a great opportunity for us to put together a good round, we just need to cut a few strokes here and there.?
Play in the Southeastern Conference Championships continues Saturday morning with the second round of play. Tee times begin at 9 a.m. ET.
