Women's Golf

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Junior Kentucky golfer Katie Johnson (Lexington, Ky.) was named to the Southeastern Conference Good Works Team for her dedication to community service, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., has announced.

?This is a tremendous honor for Katie,? UK head coach Stephanie Barker said. ?She is such a wonderful ambassador for this program and this university. We are very fortunate to have an extraordinary individual like Katie as a member of this team. Katie is the type of player and person that reminds coaches of why this profession is so rewarding.?

Johnson, who joined the team as a walk-on her freshman season and quickly became a vital member of the squad?s line-up, has participated in numerous community-service activities, to include:

Volunteering for the Kentucky Special Olympics golf event

Participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Been a part of the UK Athletics Food Drive to benefit God?s Pantry

Reading to students in a Johnson Elementary School?s fourth-grade class.

Helping at the UK Hospitality House

Participating in UK Athletics Christmas stocking stuffers.

Being a bell ringer for the Salvation Army

Raising money for Hurricane Katrina victims at home football games.

Some of her other activities include membership in the UK Honors College, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Rep. for Women?s Golf, Frank G. Ham Society of Character, Alpha Pi Omega (Service Fraternity), and Omicron Delta Kappa (Honorary Leadership Fraternity).

The Southeastern Conference sponsors Good Works Teams for all 20 league-sponsored sports. This marks the second-annual SEC women?s golf Good Works Team after the conference initiated the award in the Spring of 2005. Stacy Springer, a senior on last year?s team, was the recipient of the 2005 award.
