Knoxville, Tenn. ? The No. 20 Kentucky men?s tennis team snapped a two-match losing skid Sunday by defeating No. 42 Tennessee 5-2 in Knoxville, Tenn. The victory improved the Cats? record to 13-5 (6-2 Southeastern Conference) on the season, and gave UK its fifth win in the last seven match-ups against the Vols.
The Wildcats trailed 1-0 early after UT captured the doubles point. The Vols recorded victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots to win the point.
Once singles action began, the match belonged to Kentucky. Senior Carey Rubin started UK?s winning ways by defeating UT?s Kiril Tcherveniachki 6-3, 6-2. The victory marked the fifth in the SEC for the Canton, Ohio, native. Senior Nate Emge recorded his 16th win of the season when he beat UT?s David Baxendine in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
No. 46 Alex Hume put the Cats up 3-1 when he recorded his 26th win of the season by sweeping the Vols? Kaden Hensel 6-4, 6-3. UK clinched the match when freshman Bruno Agostinelli came from behind to beat UT?s No. 99 Bobby Cameron. Cameron took the early lead on No. 54 Agostinelli by winning the first set 6-3. The Niagara Falls, Canada, native showed great composure rallying to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-6 to record his 24th win on the season.
After having his nine-match winning streaked snapped against Georgia, sophomore Marcus Sundh got back on the winning track by beating UT?s Ben Rogers 6-1, 6-2.
?Our team did a great job of rebounding from losing the doubles point,? head coach Dennis Emery said. ?We thought the doubles point would be key. In singles action, we got ahead early and really finished the match strong.?
