Baton Rouge, La.- The No. 27 Kentucky women?s tennis team claimed victory in seven of the nine matches played on Friday in a 6-1 win over No. 41 LSU in Baton Rouge, La. UK moved to 9-6 (2-1 SEC) on the season by defeating the Tigers.
The Wildcats pounced on the Tigers early by winning two of three matches to take the doubles point. Juniors Lara Maurer and Joelle Schwenk defeated LSU?s Marina Chiarelli and Anastasiya Dubova 8-3. Senior Danielle Petrisko and junior Caroline Winebrenner took down the Tigers? Camila Caliari and Daysi Espinal 8-5 for UK?s second doubles win.
Kentucky then went on to dominate the singles portion of the match. UK?s victories came from the No. 2-6 spots in the lineup.
Schwenk, a native of Coconut Creek, Fla., started the Cats? winning ways with a straight set 6-2, 6-2, victory over Dubova. Freshman Carolina Escamilla put the Cats up to stay 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Caliari. Escamilla has now been victorious in four straight matches.
UK finished the match off with wins by Petrisko, Maurer and freshman Jessica Giuggioli. All three Cats won their matches in three sets.
?Our team played with a lot of poise during pressure situations on the road in this match,” head coach Carlos Drada said. ?We hope to carry this momentum into our next SEC match.”
