GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Freshman Ashley Muffet put herself in good contention for a berth in next week?s NCAA Indoor Championships (Fayetteville, Ark., March 10-11) with a personal-best toss of 52-4 in the shot put at the University of Florida Last Chance Qualifier Thursday.

Muffet entered the meet owning a top throw of 52-2.75, which ranked 19th nationally. As of Thursday evening, Muffet?s toss moved her into a tie for 18th. Muffet now owns the top UK freshman indoor shot put and weight throw (61-9) marks and ranks third and second, respectively, in those events all-time. The provisional standard for the shot put is 50-6.25 and the automatic mark is 55-5.50.

Gavin Ball (season-best 61-2.25) also competed in the shot put but fouled on all three throws. Last weekend, Ball placed first at the SEC indoor meet.

The remainder of the track squad will compete at Saturday?s Iowa State qualifier. For the women, Georganne Way (800) and Lavera Morris (800) will run, while Justin Harrison (400), Luis Luna (400), Nathan Browning (400), Jose Acevedo (400), Stephan Smith (800), John Richardson (mile) and Gordon McKenzie (60, 200) will compete for the men. Kentucky?s men?s 4×400 relay (ninth nationally) will also take to the track.
