NOTES
The University of Kentucky track and field squads travel to Gainesville, Fla. for the SEC Indoor Championships, Sat.-Sun. Seven (three men, four women) Wildcat athletes enter the meet having already earned NCAA provisional marks. The men’s 4×400-meter relay squad also owns a provisional mark. The meet will be held on a 200-meter flat polyurethane facility, best known for its wide, sweeping turns. The facility was the site of the 1987 200 and 400-meter trials which determined the U.S. team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships. Live stats for the meet will be available on ukathletics.com. The meet begins Friday with Heptathlon and Pentathlon competition. The Cats start action on Saturday.
Provisional Qualifiers – Men
Sophomore Justin Harrison reached a provisional mark (47.06, season PR, fifth SEC) for the second consecutive season and was one of 12 runners in the field to run below the qualification at the ISU Classic. Junior transfer Gavin Ball threw a season-best for a third consecutive meet and reached a provisional mark with a toss of 58-4 (seventh all-time UK) in the shot put. The men’s 4×400 relay improved their season-best with a time of 3:07.65, en route to a third place finish. The Cats currently rank ninth nationally and third in the SEC.
Other Notables – Men
Freshman Jose Acevedo was not far from a provisional mark, running a season-best 47.63 (10th all-time UK) two weeks ago. Normally a miler and up, sophomore John Richardson showed his versatility by running the Cats’ top 800 mark of the season (2/11, 1:50.31, fourth SEC) and falling less than a second shy of the provisional standard. Richardson also ranks tenth in the conference in the mile. Stephan Smith ranks seventh in the conference in the 800, while freshman Gordon McKenzie ranks fifth in the 60.
Bright Future
Kentucky male sprinters looked poised for a promising future with underclassmen owning the team’s top three seasonal marks in the 60, 200 and 400.
Dual Sport
Freshmen sprinters David Jones and John Logan both competed for the UK football squad this past season. Jones recorded 20 tackles as a defensive back, while Logan served as a reserve wide receiver.
Provisional Qualifiers – Women
Junior Georganne Way ran the fastest indoor and outdoor 800 of her collegiate career (2:06.49, first SEC, ninth nationally), putting the Lititz, Pa. native in good standing for an NCAA berth. Way’s time moved her from seventh all-time indoors at UK to second. Way also anchored the Cats’ distance medley relay to a first place finish. For the season, Way owns UK’s fastest times in the 800 and mile (4:51.38). Sophomore Lavera Morris also ran a personal-best in the 800 (2:07.88, third all-time UK) en route to a provisional mark at the ISU Classic. Senior Allison Grace hit a provisional mark with an indoor career-best in the 5,000 (16:43.09, sixth all-time UK).
