Waco, Texas ? Senior Alex Hume extended his singles winning streak to eight matches, but it wasn?t enough as No. 33 Kentucky fell to No. 9 Baylor 5-2 Friday in Waco, Texas, following a three hour rain delay.
Playing in the No. 1 spot, Hume, a native of Alexandria, Va., recorded arguably one of the biggest victories of his career when he defeated the Bears? 4th-ranked Lars Poerschke in straight sets 6-3, 7-6. The victory against Poerschke, who was 18-5 entering the match, was Hume?s 20th on the year. The match marked the first victory by a Wildcat over a top-5 opponent since April, 2005, when former UK standout Jesse Witten defeated Illinois? No. 5 Ryler DeHeart.
Kentucky (4-3) gained its second victory at the No. 2 spot from freshman Bruno Agostinelli. The 63rd-ranked Agostinelli won a hard-fought three set match over Baylor’s 56th-ranked Matija Zgaga. The Niagara Falls, Canada, native took the first set 7-6, before dropping the second set 5-7. In the third set, Agostinelli outlasted Zgaga 7-5 to win the match.
UK began the day by losing the doubles point. Playing for the first time as a team this year, freshman Kenny Hodge and Agostinelli defeated Will Ward and Matt Brown to tie the doubles wins at one apiece. At the No. 1 spot, Baylor?s Zgaga and Jon Reckeway beat the Cats? Marcus Sundh and Greg Johnstone 8-5 to clinch the point. Baylor then went on to win four singles matches each in straight sets.
The Cats will return to action on Tuesday when they host Tennessee Tech at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center at 1 p.m. EST. Fans can check ukathletics.com for a complete recap.
