The University of Kentucky women?s soccer team made a strong showing in its recent 9v9 indoor tournament at the Nutter Field House. The Wildcats fielded a pair of teams and each advanced to the finals which will be played on Tuesday night. UK Blue went a perfect 3-0, while the UK White team finished at 2-0-1.
?This was our first time out after a week of training and it?s good to see where we are in our development,? said head coach Warren Lipka. ?It?s nice to have a tournament like this so we can see where we are and what we need to continue to work on throughout the spring.?
In their first game of the day, UK White defeated Georgetown College by a score of 3-0. The Cats got goals from Kelsey Fenix, Nicola Holdsworth and Callie Lanphier in the shutout victory. Fenix also recorded an assist in the win, as did Rachel Ulrich and Kate Hughes.
The White team tied the U17 Ambassador Red by a score of 1-1 in its second match of the day. Kristin Kover scored the Cats? lone goal of the contest on a free kick.
In their third and final game of the day, UK White recorded its second shutout of the afternoon with a 2-0 win over Morehead State. Caitlin Coughlin and Kate Hughes added their names to the scoring column as each recorded a goal in the win.
UK Blue dominated in its opening game, downing Bellarmine by a score of 3-0. Hughes and Lanphier assisted on a goal by Katie Rice to start the scoring for the Cats. Ashley Menick added an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 and Betsy Holbrook scored her first goal of the day to make it a 3-0 final. Menick was credited with the assist on the Holbrook goal.
In their second contest, UK Blue defeated Eastern Kentucky by a final of 3-1. UK?s leading returning scorer Sarah Gaunt scored her first goal in the win over EKU, as did Kate Rowlands. Newcomer Kellye LaVera also added a goal in her debut as a Wildcat after transferring from Ole Miss last semester.
The Wildcats recorded their third win with a 3-0 shutout of U17 Blast FC in their final game of the afternoon. Rowlands and Gaunt each added their second goals of the day on assists from Kover and Lanphier. Lanphier also added her first goal for UK Blue and her second of the afternoon after scoring a goal in UK White?s win over Georgetown College. Menick assisted on the Lanphier goal.
UK?s spring schedule continues Feb. 25 at Indiana?s 10v10 Indoor Friendlies in Bloomington, Ind.
