The No. 13 Kentucky women?s tennis team defeated No. 39 Maryland Friday 5-2 at the Tennis Center in College Park, Md. The Cats have won their first four matches of the season and will return to the Terps? home courts tomorrow to take on No. 29 Texas A&M.
The Cats started the day by claming the doubles point against the Terrapins. The combination of junior Lara Maurer and freshman Carolina Escamilla handled Maryland?s Brooke Rogers and Veronika Subertova 8-4, while senior Danielle Petrisko and junior Caroline Winebrenner clinched the point with a 9-7 victory over the Terps’ Julia Graca and Neda Mihneva.
In singles action, the Cats claimed four of the six matches to secure the victory. The Cats received another strong effort from Maurer who defeated Subertova in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. The Bay Village, Ohio, native is 4-0 in singles matches to begin match play this season. Escamilla picked up the third victory of her young career by sweeping Mihneva 7-6, 6-4.
The bottom two of the Cats’ lineup came up huge by recording a pair of victories to clinch the match for UK. Freshman Jessica Giuggioli won her fourth straight match to begin her Wildcat career by defeating UM?s Jennifer Dent 6-1, 6-3.
Reigning Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Week Petrisko notched the final victory of the day for UK by beating Maryland?s Michal Amir in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Saturday?s match against the Aggies will begin at 11 a.m. EST. Tomorrow?s match will mark the season opener for TAMU. Fans can check ukathletics.com for a complete recap of the match.
